Tucked away down a nondescript side street with next to no visible signage, you’d be forgiven for walking straight past PlantHolic without even realising it. To do so, however, would mean missing out on great food that manages to be both healthy and delicious, plus some of the friendliest service on the island.
PlantHolic’s menu consists of a range of seasonal dishes such as soup, salad and a veggie sushi bowl, plus trendy health favourites like acai bowls, wheatgrass shots and smoothies. You can also choose from a variety of beautifully presented desserts, including different types of raw cakes and tarts. Everything is vegan, gluten-free, raw, and made without the use of white sugar, preservatives or additives – perfect for people with allergies, special diets, or who are just on a health kick!
Unlike many ‘healthy’ restaurants which sacrifice flavour for nutrition, PlantHolic creates meals that are both fresh and indulgent, never bland, and leave you feeling satisfied but not uncomfortably full.
The owner is an absolute delight, and more than happy to talk you through the menu (in both English and Japanese) or just chat about life in Okinawa! She makes all of the food herself, so be prepared for a bit of a wait if the restaurant is busy – but rest assured, it will be worth it. The prices are a little on the expensive side, but this is reflected in the quality of the ingredients used. There’s also a small shop section selling packaged ingredients for home cooking, and takeaway treats – make sure you try the brownies!
