After a long, hot summer, Okinawa celebrates the turn of seasons in spectacular style; with illuminations! There are many events across island, but we have narrowed it down to our top five favorite displays.
1. Itoman Peaceful illuminations.
Started in 1999, this stunning display aims to “light a wish for peace”. Held at Uchina Farm, it runs from mid-December until early January. As well as the display, there is entertainment and festival food. Find it here
2. Ryukyu Lantern Festival.
Held at Murasaki Mura in Yomitan, the lantern festival is a great family friendly event. There’s food, entertainment, and some of the most creative lanterns you’ll ever see! Get there early and enjoy Murasaki Mura before sunset, and your admittance fee includes the lantern festival. Find it here
3. Kanucha Resort Stardust Fantasia.
Arguably one of the best, and best known, illuminations is the stardust Fantasia. Held from early November to Mid-February, it changes to accommodate Christmas, New Years, and St. Valentine’s Day. It’s perfect for a date night! Find it here
4. Southeast Botanical Gardens illuminations.
Southeast Botanical gardens plays host to a colorful light display every year between late November and early February. Entrance to this is separate to the gardens, which close briefly to set up every evening. Find it here
5. Children’s Zoo Christmas Fantasy.
Okinawa Children’s zoo in Okinawa city hosts the Christmas Fantasy illuminations yearly during the week of Christmas. Fun for all the family, it also includes Eisa dancers, a snow falling show, and lots of entertainment. Find it here
